Protect your windows and doors this winter

Reduce the risk of costly repairs and get the best from your investment through the colder months

We get a lot of requests for window repairs all year round and many of them are due to lack of maintenance. While we are very happy to come and carry out repairs, as winter is now truly upon us we thought we’d remind you that your windows and doors will benefit from a bit of attention. Regular maintenance can prolong the life of your windows and doors, help to prevent them from failing and save you from costly repairs.

Take care of your windows this winter. If you get a quiet moment or two over the festive season, spend a little time on your double glazing. Just a few minutes of your time, once a year really does make a big difference and will help keep your windows and doors effective at keeping your home warm and cosy during the colder months.

We recommend simply spraying all the moving parts of your windows with WD40 to keep the moisture out and keep them moving smoothly. If you open your windows up you will be able to gain access to the hinges, either at the side or top and bottom of the window. A quick spray on all the moving parts is all that’s required. While the window/door is open do the same to the bolts and locks on the side, moving the handle a few times to ensure that the lubricant is distributed.

A few mintues effort could save you hundreds of pounds

You should also spray your doors using exactly the same procedure paying attention to the hinges, locks and keeps. Once you have the hang of it, lubricating your windows and doors in an average 3 bed semi-detached home should take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour and cost around £5.00 for a can of WD40 compared with potentially £100’s of pounds to replace locks or hinges if they are not taken care of and start to fail.

To keep your frames looking good your UPVC windows should be cleaned with soapy water at least twice a year and preferably every 6 weeks.

It really is as easy as that to keep your doors and windows sound this winter and beyond!
